The laws of human nature might not become Greene’s most popular work but it’s his most relevant and in-depth book to date. In fact, the laws of human nature should be the first book read out of all of Greene’s books. This book empowers the reader with the knowledge to actually follow the laws in Greene’s previous work.
For example, One will not be able to obtain mastery of anything if they can’t understand human nature. Nor will they have the discipline to follow the 48th,50th and 33 strategies of war.
However, if you picking up this book to learn about everyone outside yourself, you’ll be disappointed. Unless you’re not human the laws of nature will apply to you as well. As an apprentice in Greene’s class you will discover hidden suppressed demons and emotions that you may or may have been aware of.
Each chapter begins with a story related to the topic of the chapter. Greene gives his interpretation of the events, then explains your task as his apprentice.
With social media today you would think no one has a dark side and nothing is ever their fault. Playing the victim is seen as the norm rather than something to avoid. Greene’s chapter titled “Confront your dark side” may empower those comfortable with their social media victimhood habits.
Your task as a student of human nature is to recognize and examine the dark side of your character. Once subjected to conscious scrutiny, it loses its destructive power. If you can learn to detect the signs of it in yourself you can channel this darker energy into productive activity. You can turn your neediness and vulnerability into empathy. Your can channel your aggressive impulses into
worthwile causes and into your workd. You can admit your ambition, yourdesire for power, and not act so guilty and stealthily. .. monitor your suspicious tendencies and the projection of your own negative emotions onto others. You can see that selfish and harmful impulses dwell within you as well, that you are not as angelic or strong as you imagine . With this awareness will come balance and greater tolerance for others.
But, maybe you follow all the trends to feel as if your apart of a certain group or ideology. We let our confirmation bias determine who and what we follow on social media and in the real world. As an apprentice of Greene you will study the chapter titled “Resist the downward pull of the group”.
To resist this downward pull that groups inevitably exert on us, us must conduct a very different experiment in human nature..with a simple goal in mind- to develop the ability to detach ourselves from the group and create some mental space for true independent thinking. We begin this experiment by accepting the reality of the powerful effect that the group has on us. We are brutally honest with ourselves, aware of how our need to fit in can shape and warp our thinking. Does that anxiety or sense of outrage that we feel come completely from within, or is it inspired by the group? …We must train ourselves to not blindly venerate our leaders;.. respect them for their accomplishments without feeling the need to deify them…be especially careful around those who have charismatic appeal, and try to demystify and pull them down to earth. With such awareness, we can begin to resist and detach.
