As much as we think Americans has worked hard throughout the decades to become a global superpower, we have a lot of counterproductive habits. Phrases such as “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” and “sleep is for the week” make us feel good.
However, It gives us a false sense of productivity just because we’re “busy”. Americans have mastered the art of looking busy without really getting anything accomplished, but without getting enough sleep you may even not be aware of this. Todays book review of Sleeping your way to the top may help you.
In this capitalistic society, sleep has always commonly gotten a bad rap. Rappers consistently brag about hustling their way to the top. Whether it be standing outside selling drugs all day and night or hustling CDs. sleep is portrayed as an obstacle to the road of success. Even some of today’s social media multi-millionaires such as Gary Vee has tweeted that “its not how much sleep you get, but what you do when you’re awake”. According to Authors, Terry Cralle and W. David Brown of Sleeping your way to the top, Vee’s comments are highly misleading.

In fact, the book’s first chapter opens with a social media billionaire, who happens to be president. Titled “Trumping Sleep”, the chapter counters Trump’s advice to sleep as little as possible to become a billionaire. “Wealthy people sleep more than the nonwealthy” a 2013 Gallup Poll reveals.
So Are successful millionaires and rappers trying to intentionally mislead us? While that may be the case for some, the answer could be genetic. A gene called PER3 may explain why night owls had larger means of income and were better off financially. This still doesn’t explain why sleep deprivation is a global epidemic. Sleep deprivation is the leading cause of traffic accidents, not alcohol.
Yet where are the sleep deprivation meetings and groups? There are hundreds of fitness and health gurus but how many sleep gurus do you know? Data shows that sleep is just as if not more important than exercise and diet when it comes to health.
Sleeping your way to the top can get a little redundant, because how many ways can you tell someone to get more sleep? However, the book still manages to go beyond practical advise on sleep. For instance, What if your sleep deprived and don’t even know it? Sleeping your way to the top will help you identify symptoms and patterns to get you back on track. Furthermore, the book explains why couples who sleep in separate beds stay together longer. But what about sleeping outside your home.?
In our review of 21 lessons for the 21st century, Yuval Harrai states that technology is moving faster than most of us comprehend. That the oncoming generations will have to have several careers and that Transcendental meditation will give us clarity. If being still is the answer then don’t sleep on it, read sleeping your way to the top.
