Sedentary living, why doing nothing is killing you, thanks to technology.
Viewers of this website were warned about entertainment killing their lifespan last year. It’s not that we don’t want people to not enjoy life, quite the contrary. It’s the quality that counts. Despite “advances” in technology, study after study is constantly reminding us of its shortcomings. Here’s why Sedentary living is slowly killing you.
The majority of people are entertaining themselves while simultaneously killing themselves.
Sedentary living is the 4th leading cause of death but its effects aren’t immediate. Decades of consuming media while doing nothing won’t look threatening, but it is. Comfort can be extremely deceiving. Our hustle culture rat race society looks forward to comfort and luxury. We consume things to compensate for how unhappy we really are most of the time.
A person being comfortable and relaxed is the last thing you’d expect for a life-threatening picture. For instance, a wrecked car is used to invoke the fear of drunk driving. Or former smokers using a voice back to discourage the usage of smoking cigarettes. But how can the message of sedentary living expressed by someone laying on a sofa invoke the same fear? And herein lies the problem.
The average hunter-gather walked 3-5 miles per day. Today? 1.5-2miles, or around 5,000 steps, that’s probably on a good day and has decreased during the pandemic. Although covid restrictions are decreasing how will people see the dangers of Sedentary living if the effects aren’t immediate? If our society and culture don’t stigmatize Sedentary living then people will continue to do it. Furthermore, our ultra-sensitive society that doesn’t hesitate to call a controversial opinion shaming doesn’t help.
Consuming sports, entertainment, and pop culture are the main things that contribute to a Sedentary living. The lifestyle of a consumer is dangerous, especially for independent thinkers. It creates a passive approach to solving problems and depletes our confidence. This is why the battle for your attention is so important because a sedentary lifestyle sucks your life away.
When we consume mindless entertainment our lives aren’t that much better. The problems we faced prior to the pandemic with streaming services are still lingering. Even walking on a treadmill while consuming entertainment will have positive changes in our lives. The Euronews article details a book on sedentary lifestyle becoming a global epidemic…
“Every year an estimated 5.3 million people die from causes related to inactive living – roughly the population of Norway. An extraordinary 80 percent of British children move so little that they face a future with poorly developed cardiovascular systems, weak bones, and chronic illness.”

The book’s name – The Miracle Pill – relates to a study in Denmark that tracked 30,000 randomly selected people over the course of 15 years. After adjusting for all other factors, the people who cycled to and from work (an average commute of just 15 minutes across the group) were 40 percent less likely to have died during the research period.

With a sedentary lifestyle being a public health crisis will public officials factor this in when reopening cities? Not only are we giving away our data, our attention but our lifespan in exchange for a few hours of superficial joy. Hopefully, this will encourage readers to see how increased screen time is not only dangerous to kids’ school cognitive function. But their life span as well, kids are more overweight and diabetic than ever before.
We already informed our readers of the 8th deadly sin, artificial intelligence, which is a major cause of sedentary living. If excessive food causes gluttony, excessive usage of artificial intelligence in our lives prohibits our autonomy.
However, the deadly sin sloth represents Sedentary living as well. Sloth is is a representation of spiritual laziness and boredom with god. With more people leaving religion and church than ever before perhaps there’s a correlation.
Proverbs 13:4 – “The soul of the lazy man desires, and has nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.” … But the lazy man’s desires remain unsatisfied, while the diligent gain wealth
In conclusion, with sloth or Sedentary living becoming the norm perhaps we should rethink universal basic income. We should rethink our relationship with technology and how it influences our inactivity as well. However, we should move with mindfulness and awareness not just for the sake of moving. Sometimes the most dangerous things don’t appear to be dangerous at all. Stay tuned for updates.

I find that if I make more frequent walks to stores within the neighborhood to buy just a few things that can be easily carried I have more energy and feel happier than if I stayed locked in my home, awaiting delivery of my groceries.
