Money hungry pistons owner Tom Gore’s exploits prison labor, while NBA players manipulate your attention span
Surprise, another billionaire alleged racist owner in the NBA. The narrative around this article will of course be Tom Gores profiting off inmates’ prison phone calls, which is great for prison reform stories. Especially since Maya Moore is sports illustrated “inspiration” of the year a few days ago. However, focusing too much on business practices negates the attention of the major problem. Here’s how Tom Gore exploits prison labor, while NBA players manipulate your attention span…
An ad in the recent New York times paper called out Owner Tom Gore’s specifically to divest from telecommunication in the prison industry. While prison reform is a real issue, charging for inmates to use the phone falls low on the hierarchy of issues. Unfair sentencing, the 13th amendment, bail reform and are all more relevant. What everyone is failing to realize is;
Your attention span reflects your self worth
Doing time in prison, no disrespect is similar to doing time to our addictions. We imprison ourselves or are manipulated into wasting our time seeking another dopamine hit. Sports fanatics’ addiction to entertainment and inmates’ impulsiveness both lack the self-discipline to control their emotions. Both are looking to fill a void within their lives. Perhaps the real crime is not being self-aware of our thoughts and how much attention we give to them…
A person can be free in jail while someone on the outs can be locked up..Doing time is all mental and internal.
On average over 91% of our worries don’t come true
In prison, we are isolated from society and the same is said for excessive use of entertainment. Do you keep track of how many hours you consume entertainment and why you consume it. Are you isolating an internal part of you that you don’t want to address? Being entertained isolates us from reality, gives us a temporary break from our perceived annoyances. When entertained were in the zone and focused on whatever is entertaining us. A self-imprisonment of nostalgia if you will.
Detroit is a well-known sports city, most poverty-stricken democrat cities are. Crime ridden, bad schools, gentrification, poverty, dilapidated housing are a constant reminder of our bleak reality. The infamous malice in the palace took place in Detroit and the bad boy’s pistons are known as the most physical team in NBA history..These types of teams give fans an outlet to vent their anger and frustration with our reality. Fans can live through the aggressiveness of their players.
Sports must be consumed to distract us from working on these pressing issues. Point the figure at others rather than take inventory of how our attention is being spent. Doing time is not exclusive to prison but bad habits that don’t make us the best version of ourselves. And it’s time for the world to acknowledge sports fanaticism as a bad habit.
As long as there are majority white owners and capitalism it’s just business nothing personal motto, there will always be a Tom Gore’s. But don’t expect athletes to save the day either. Athletes make too much money to become activists. Athletes are too far removed from the everyday struggle of the common man. They have spent their entire lives playing basketball most have never worked a job in their entire lives.
In conclusion, even if the owners were all black and didn’t exploit prison labor, the NBA still doesn’t deserve the attention we give it. Fans of the sport are victims of marketing that promotes idol worship of athletes. This is time and energy spent being unproductive that could be used collectively to fight effectively on these issues. The ball is in your court, break the spell of entertainment distraction now.
