NBA needs to change name to “Not Black Activist”
Corporate interests prevail in the game of professional sports yet again. It was cute to almost cancel the playoffs after the shooting in Wisconsin. Having black lives matter on the court and phrases to raise awareness on the back of players’ jerseys was innovative by NBA commissioner Adam Silver. Was it for a show or a serious statement?. The NBA must realize that entertainment isn’t anywhere near the top of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
Despite its success in the sports world for the last several years and longer, Kansas city has a police problem. In fact, its citizens are protesting and calling for its chief of police to resign. Does this seem like good timing for an NBA team to temporarily relocate there? Recently, a 9-month pregnant black woman was handcuffed and thrown on the ground by police. Also, a 15-year-old had his face smashed by officers.
The NBA wants to advocate for social justice for people of color while distracting and playing for cities with large numbers of, people of color. Something has to give, this is a conflict of interest. The NBA isn’t ready to sacrifice a season until social injustice is resolved, that will take too long anyway.
The goal and objectives of the NBA to advocate social issues aren’t clear either. It’s more complicated than putting a ball in a basket. No offense. But if Kansas city doesn’t work out, there are other cities with a decent black population right?
NBA players wanted to stay in the bubble to raise awareness of the murder of Breonna Taylor. Now Silver is considering relocating a team to Louisville. Where Breonna Taylor was murdered. Not only that Stern is also considering starting the season on MLK day of all days. And yes I’m still offended as a black man that the NBA plays on that day..
As if people need more of a slap in the face. What role does entertainment play in fighting injustices? Does it distract people? or provides temporary enjoyment from harsh realities of systematic oppression?.
Both… The social activism by NBA players turned off those on the far right which contributed to record low viewership. Caught in the middle, athletes want to play but fear a short turnaround time to next season neglects their health and family time.
It appears players don’t realize they’re pawns and voluntary servants to their owner’s corporate interests. Ali will remain the greatest because he truly stood for what he believed in and walked away from the game at his peak. It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that the top 10 of today’s NBA players wouldn’t risk jail time and retire at their peak to make a statement against social injustice.
Professional Athletes are so safe and removed from society which makes it difficult to take their activism seriously. Athletes should be commended for speaking out but must realize their being looked up to as role models. Their actions are teaching kids this is how you fight against injustice when you make money. You complain but don’t take too much of a risk.
In conclusion, this is why entertainment is dangerous. Entertainers have too much influence and access to the youth via social media. Athletes should be applauded for efforts on the court but also when coming up short on social issues. If they’re going to put themselves out there socially.
