Often we hear of the jokes within the black community of white people loving dogs more than black people and people in general. White America has coined the phrase “Man’s best friend”. Dogs can be easily domesticated, protective, and most importantly, trusted, whats not to like? Ask Michael Vick his opinion.
Dogs don’t require much maintenance or attention. In essence a dog is somewhat of a happy slave animal to white America that will seldom complain or rebel, a yelp at best. The black man and the dog share lots of similarities in their relationship to white america.
Prior and even during the civil rights era, Dogs and black people were often prohibited from going to the same establishments.
Furthermore, just as the white man takes pride in domesticating a dog, the same goes for the black mans position in society. The black man through slavery and systematic racism has been domesticated from his “primitive” wild ways from Africa.
How dare the black man complain and voice his dissatisfaction with oppression. Likewise a dog will always show gratitude for having residency in a home as oppose to the outside cold world. During the civil rights era things begin to change.
What has changed however is the treatment and compassion for dogs in white America. During the 90’s dog shows were televised across the nation and dogs were appearing in movies more than ever before. Which brings us to Michael Vick.
In 2007 Michael Vick plead guilty to running a dog fighting ring. Now obviously a person can have compassion for dogs, animals and not be racist, but sports fanatics are a different, breed. There’s very little logic used to justify the depths of their anger. Furthermore, fanatics are often racist in disguise and will use any evidence no matter how insignificant to justify their anger.
To make matters worse Michael Vick was a quarterback in the NFL.. No other position in sports history is more loved by white America and played by historically white players than quarterback. But let’s take race and sports out of the equation for a minute.
Dog lovers are often ignorant to their own hypocrisy for being animist. Because dogs can be domesticated and it isn’t socially acceptable to eat them makes them better than other animals? If dog cruelty is wrong so is animal cruelty. Just because Michael Vick ran an “illegal” dog ring, doesn’t make him any different than a “legal” slaughter house.
In fact, what would you consider worse, dogs killing dogs for money or humans killing animals for money for us to eat them?. Yet sports dog lovers remain silent on the slaughtering of animals that they consume while tailgating, at the stadium or watching on their t.v., with their dog.
For the 2020 Pro Bowl next month, Michael Vick is scheduled to be honor. However there are 3 petitions that have over 700,000 signatures combined urging the NFL to not honor Vick. Michael Vick has paid his debt to society by spending years in jail. Furthermore Vick is a sports analyst on several sports shows on Cable Television.
In conclusion the love of animals will always surpass the love of black people. To develop a real relationship takes accountability, acknowledging privilege, and reciprocity. White America has always tried to tame or domesticate black people to submit to their culture and ideologies.
In conclusion, to submit to holidays, unhealthy medicinal practices and swear on a holy book that was used as justification to kill us while inside courts that don’t serve justice. And this is why White America will always love dogs more than black people.
