Formerly, when you did not know god. You were slaves to those who by nature, were not gods. Galatians 4:8
Mormons are famously known for their outreach all across major cities in America. you can spot their black ties and helmets a mile away. Know for their ridged beliefs and non integration into mass society, what makes them so interested in basketball? Obviously every fan isn’t a mormon at Jazz games.
However they do attend and long standing owner Larry miller was mormon. Jazz fans are some of the most loyal in the country. Their arena is consistently filled despite not having a championship contending team for the entire 21st century.
Idolize- To Admire,Revere,Love greatly or excessively
However, playing the sport for recreational use vs idolizing players by giving them our time, energy and resources couldn’t be any more different. Even more strange is the profiting off the Idol worship of other fans/Mormons. It shows the lack of religious integrity by Mr. Miller and other Mormons who turn a blind eye.
This is what makes America such a funny place today. The desire for wealth caused by capitalism will often trump our religious morals. Even worse is justifying our greed with statements such as;
“God wants us all to be rich”
“The lord works in mysterious ways”
Unfortunately, Salt Lake City isn’t alone. Players all over the country are being idolized by teens with or without father figures. If a player is idolized greatly by fans she or he will get a statue or a street named after them.
Not only for their loyalty to the fans but for helping generate millions of dollars and for attracting tourist. This Idol worship has been happening for decades yet we complain about not having enough control or influence over our children.
We also complain about the devolution of societies morals and integrity. When it comes to money and family dynamics. But who will do it? Calling out Idol worship of athletes is a sure way to become an outcast by society.
After all, Lebron James and Renaldo alone have a half a billion followers combined on social media. After all only the “lame kids” get picked last or not at all to play sports.
In the defense of athletes, Lebron James has consistently spoken out about the world needing more doctors and lawyers as opposed to basketball players.
At what point did sports determine moral and social leverage over the common man and woman? T.V. contracts, rise in sponsorships, Popularity in shoes? These are all false illusions of success that propel said athlete to heaven like status we perceive them to be.
In all honesty, all of America from the suburbs to the inner city is as guilty as salt lakes Mormons. For every single parent struggling there is a private jet pastor propelling from one of the many churches in black American communities.
God wants us to be wealthy but not be majority owners in a majority-black league that players in majority-black cities?
In our 21 lessons for the 21st-century book review. Author Yuval Harari writes about the Abrahamic religious updating from their orthodox beliefs to adopt to adapt to “first world” capitalistic societies.
In conclusion, while this is somewhat understandable, the idolization of professional athletes isn’t a requirement for our 4 basic needs to survive. The more we intertwine god and worship of humans we will continue to fall deeper into moral debt thus losing our integrity as “civilized” human beings.
