ROBOT COP is GOOD or is it?
As a black male no as a black person period, we’ve all been there. Pulled over whether it’s justified or not. We have that self-talk with ourselves to not put ourselves in “harm’s way”.
We will compartmentalize these emotions because there’s a sense that our life could be in danger if we “overreact”. For those of us who were adults before camera phones, you especially know what I’m talking about. Now, people have a say in the narrative of police brutality, a solution for both parties has been implemented. A robot cop?
Resonance news is no stranger to taking a pessimistic approach to A.I., especially how it applies to gentrification. However, when it comes to police brutality and “routine traffic stops, the future could be promising. Next time you’re pulled over how would you respond to a robot, that isn’t armed. You can finally relax and not take your tension out on the steering wheel as to not appear threatening.
Armed with two cameras, a microphone and speaker, go-between, will slide from the front of the police vehicle. It will be the first interaction the driver has will the police when pulled over.
It’s creator Reuben Brewer Senior robotics research engineer has contacted 4 police departments with varied responses. Not surprisingly the video has more thumbs down than thumbs up, but the comments are disabled.
Those possibly on the right feel that this panders to “social justice” warriors inability to comply with law enforcement orders. While those on the left may feel that this is yet another cop-out for holding police responsible. Here’s why both may be wrong and are missing the bigger picture.
While the robot cop is a genius idea, it still absolves police officers from accountability for their actions. Robot cop can’t bring back the millions of innocent lives that have died since the inception of the police force . They can’t comfort the families, their human co-workers in blue have murdered either.
A.I. already has a stronghold on our psyche creating a co-dependency on the path of least resistance .. Let’s just hope this police injustice activism will not be a victim of this A.I. co-dependency.
in conclusion,The video acknowledges from the beginning that traffic stops are dangerous for both police and drivers, both are fearful. Brewer wants to put robots in danger, not people.
While just a prototype it shows great potential. that could save lives on both sides. However, it doesn’t solve the hiring practice and inability to vet racist officers.
