The overwhelming majority of celebrities will never show up to protests because they’re removed from society. Yet their profession is solely based on being able to connect with its audience. If activists could resonate with the masses like the Hollywood elite, the world would change overnight.
Writing about celebrity and idol worship of entertainers and athletes doesn’t come from a place of envy. It comes from wanting genuine relationships, not faking it until you make it, and pretend it some more. Social media has given idols the ability to appear more relative to their fans more than ever in entertainment history. But it’s just harmless entertainment, and no one is forcing people to consume it.
That couldn’t be any further from the truth; there’s nothing harmless about idly wasting your time if we want justice and actual change, that comes from prioritizing our time. It’s going to go from humanizing our idols real or imagined.
Ironically, marketing teaches that there’s no money in being neutral. Being polarizing and taking a stance will grow your audience and haters at the same time. Yet the Hollywood elite can maintain an impartial, silent position on injustices while posting record box office receipts because “blank” buy movie tickets too.
